Charlie over at the Inquirer got his hands on a Geforce GTX 280 without having to sign an NDA and posted his benchmark results yesteday, something that Nvidia surely isn't too happy about. Charlie has run no less than 28 different tests on the card and compared it to a Geforce 9800 GX2 for good measures.

The test system consisted of a Core 2 Duo Extreme X9650 CPU at 3GHz, but there's no mention of motherboard and memory used. None the less, the results are quite impressive with the GTX 280 beating the 9800 GX2 to a pulp in most of the tests.

However, it looks like Nvidia still has a lot of driver tweaking to do, as the card doesn't perform that well in Lost Planet in some resolutions, although saying that, if you intend to splash out on this card, you'll most likely have a screen to match and it looks like this is the performance ard for high resolutions.

You can find the benchmark results here (http://www.theinquirer.net/gb/inquirer/news/2008/06/14/complete-gtx280-scores-here) .

GTX 280 scores 14,800 in 3Dmark06

We managed to get a few scores out of the soon to be launch Geforce GTX 280, the fastest Nvidia card. In 3Dmark06 a single card scores 14,800 and we are talking about a high end overclocked quad core Intel based system.

If you plug in two Geforce 280 GTX cards and enable SLI you will get a slightly better score of 18,000 and with the 177.34 drivers if you plug three GTX 280 cards and enable 3-way SLI you end up getting 18,100 which is not something to get excited about.

You obviously need a better driver for 3-way SLI for these cards and we can tell you that these tree cards needs a lot of power and that all test were conducted on Vista 32-bit.

Each card needs approximately 215W of power and this is a lot of power for a graphics card. In 3Dmark Vantage, Nvidia will score slightly better, but we didn’t managed to get these scores at press time.

Radeon HD4850 scores 13,500 in 3Dmark06

We’ve seen some performance data on the Radeon HD 4850 and we can tell you that the card runs some quite impressive numbers.

In 3Dmark06 the HD 4850 can score 13,500 while the old 3850 scored about 8,700 in the same test. If you put two 3850 in Crossfire you will end up with 12,700, again a score that is slower than a single Radeon HD 4850.

Two Radeon HD 4850 will score around 18,000 points on an Intel based high end machine. 13,500 is a great score as a dual chip HD 3870 X2 card with 1GB memory will score 15,500 which is not that much better than the 13,500, that the Radeon HD 4850 manages to score.

This is great performance for a $199 suggested etail priced card, but we still need to see how it will score in games.

Radeon HD 4870 will sample by the end of this week, which is the last possible deadline to meet the 25th of June launch deadline.

We know that ATI is happy with the performance and that the card will run rather hot. With a suggested etail price of $329 it should become quite popular.

The Radeon HD 4870 and HD 4850 are still on schedule to launch on the 25th and we’ve heard from many sources that the HD 4870 won’t be that much slower than the GTX 280 and at the same time it will cost only half of what you are suppose to have to spend on a Geforce GTX 280.

Nvidia GTX280 (http://1deins.de/content.php?artikelId=VGAP10-GB0780&kategorieId=892&file=1) 499,11 €
Nvidia GTX260 (http://1deins.de/content.php?artikelId=VGAP89-ZO0200&kategorieId=892&file=1) 322,11 €
